In 2007 the use of hashtags in tweets had become popular and it has only grown from there. It has grown into one amazing, useful tool to use for marketing purposes if used correctly. It has also grown into something that can be harmful if not used correctly. Here is how to use the hashtag properly in your social media strategy.
1) Do Not Over Use The Hashtag
This is the number one rule! I repeat: DO NOT OVER USE THE HASHTAG! This is what will ruin not only your campaign but your brand image as well. It can become very annoying.
Utilize the hashtag to drive more engagement to whatever you are trying to promote. Studies have shown that a tweet with a hashtag has a higher engagement level compared to a tweet without it.
3) Integrate Activity Across Multiple Platforms
Facebook is one of the newest platforms to integrate hashtags into the experience. You can now carry a theme throughout multiple platforms and still be able to tailor the content to each platform. This makes it easier to follow your brand’s “story” throughout today’s top channels of the consumers.
4) Have a “Real Time” Conversation With Your Fans
With the use of hashtags, you can keep up with what the real time conversation is on any particular subject. Create your own story with your fans with creative hashtags that will promote your brand and you eventually become the topic of conversation!
